A SMALL GUIDE
How to use this tool
- Paste text or open a UTF-8 text file.
- Choose encode or decode, the entity format and the characters to encode.
- Compare the result, then copy it or download a text file.
When this tool helps
Prepare literal markup for documentation, decode exported text or convert symbols into character references. UTF-8 already supports accented letters; encoding every non-ASCII character is optional.
Conversion runs in your browser. No account or subscription is required, and downloads have no watermark.
Questions before you start
How does decoding work?
Named and numeric references ending in a semicolon are decoded once. Unknown references stay unchanged. HTML tags are kept as text and never executed.
Can I avoid double encoding?
Enable Preserve existing entities when encoding. Disable it when you deliberately need another encoding layer. Escaping text is not a substitute for sanitizing HTML.
